In the late 17th century, a summer residence for the prince-electors of the House of Welf was built near the city, and since then, Herrenhausen has become one of the great cultural sights of Europe. The 50 hectares of baroque gardens have remained virtually unchanged and give an insight into past times.

New City Hall

Neues Rathaus
Trammplatz 2
30159 Hannover, Germany
Phone: (0049) 0 511-168

Opening Hours:

Mo.-Fr.: 08:00 - 18:00
Sa.-Sun.: 10:00 - 18:00

The city hall is the seat of the lord mayor, the head of the city’s administration. It is here that the sessions of the political bodies, the receptions of official guests of the city, and art exhibitions take place. In addition to that, the new city hall also houses the “citizen’s office”. Of course, the city hall is also open to visitors – and definitely worth a visit.

Underneath a dome that is almost one hundred metres high, four models of the city are on display in the city hall lobby, each one of them showing a different stage of Hanover’s evolution – the Medieval times, before World War II, the destruction of 1945, and the city centre of today. These models alone attract countless visitors. But there’s more to see. The new civic hall in the east wing, for instance, where numerous exhibitions and smaller events take place. The international press centre that was opened here in October, 1999 – co-sponsored by the Madsack Verlagsanstalt GmbH publishing house –, was put to good use during EXPO 2000, when journalists from all over the world swarmed these rooms. Some rooms are also reserved to the journalists of two Hanover-based newspapers, Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung (HAZ) and the Neue Presse (NP), connected by lease lines to the editorial offices – a service no other major German city offers to its local press.

Elevator rides in the city hall dome are only offered during the summer season.

The marketplace, where the craftsmen and merchants of the town used to live, was at the very centre of urban expansion in Hanover. The church that was built by this marketplace in the 14th century was therefore simply called Marktkirche: market church. Here, one can also find the grave of general Johann Michael von Obentraut, who was a strategic mastermind during the Thirty Years’ War. Today, he is more commonly known as the “Deutsche Michel” – a nickname the Germans also use when referring to themselves.

Maschsee Lake

Maschsee
Rudolf-von Bennigsen-Ufer
3017 Hannover, Germany

Maschsee lake is well-known far beyond the city limits and has become one of the most popular excursion destinations. This artificial lake comprises 0.8 square kilometres and was created in the 1930s in the flood meadows surrounding the river Leine. It draws many water sportsmen, but also cyclists, joggers, and walkers who enjoy the beauty of the lakeside paths. Over the course of the last years, Maschsee lake has also attracted more and more inline skaters.

Many regattas and other boat races – such as the annual dragon boat race - have been held on this lake that is perfect for any kind of water sport. Close to Sprengel Museum, there is a boat rental and a sailing and yacht school, and there is another one near Altenbekener Damm, in the vicinity of a lovely restaurant and café. On the other side of the lake, one can see the boathouses of Hanover’s canoe club and the city’s school boathouse. Apart from sailing, rowing, taking a trip in a pedal boat, and windsurfing, the lake is naturally also perfect for swimming: The Maschsee lido is situated on the Southern bank.

Eilenriede (Europe's greatest city forest!!)

Near Walderseestrasse

With 640 hectares, Hanover’s Eilenriede is the biggest city forest in Europe – not even Hyde Park in London or Bois de Bologne in Paris are that big. The city’s green lung is situated in the Eastern part of Hanover, close to the city centre, and it boasts a vast network of paths, hundreds of benches, ponds, lawns for sunbathing, playgrounds, and several restaurants – which makes Eilenriede perfect for citizens and visitors who are looking for some recreation.

For more than 600 years, the forest has been under municipal control, but only in the 19th century was forest declared a nature recreation area. The Hanoverians love their Eilenriede and take good take of it. It is the destination of many strolls, picnics and weekend trips. By the way, there is also an Eilriede council; It was established in the 1950s, when plans to have the Messeschnellweg expressway run straight through the city forest caused massive public protest.

Flea Market (on the bank of the river Leine/ Old Town)

The flea market takes place every Saturday from 07:00 to 16:00.

Every Saturday, early risers, strollers, and bargain hunters flock to Hanover’s Old Town to look, haggle, and buy. The flea market is situated at “Am Hohen Ufer”, between Schlossstraße and Goethestraße, and the diverse offers and the atmosphere certainly make this spot worth a visit.

The flea market in Hanover’s Old Town is well-known far beyond the borders of the city, and many of the people one can find strolling between the tables, or haggling with the sellers, come from as far away as the Netherlands, Belgium, or other parts of Germany.

New or mass goods are nowhere to be seen – here, you can find works of art or examples of pure kitsch, antiques and rummage, from water colour paintings to picture frames or chandeliers. Chests from grandmother’s days, jewelry, carpets, ornate china, precious glasses, comics, vinyl records, CDs, toys, tools, old table linen – anything you can imagine you will find here.

At the turn of the century, the former reedy marsh (hence the name Rethmar), that had been drained two hundred years ago to be used for agricultural purposes, was turned into a paradise for gold aficionados.

Agricultural areas are usually not known for their beauty or architectural extravagance. But Arnold Palmer turned the drab fields surrounding the picturesque village of Rethmar into one of the most attractive golf courses in Germany, if not Europe. He created a natural landscape with lakes and green, rolling hills, surrounded by thick forests. Not even Mother Nature herself could have done better. Apart from the course itself, there are also other places to perfect your game. There are: a driving range with eight target greens, chipping greens with impressive bunkers, and 1,800 square metres of putting green.

Fit into this natural beauty is the extensive orangery and the Rethmar Golf Links club house with its big sun terrace that is perfect for a cold drink after a game of golf.
